Digital Literacies and My Identities: Teenagers Perspective

Digital Literacies? A term that's not at all unfamiliar to my generation. Alright, now i'll share my opinion regarding digital literacy. But before that, let me introduce myself. My name is Cahya Sekar Kinanti Wicaksana from XI-7 with student number 10. I will explain my opinion from the perspective of a teenager who enjoys using Twitter and Quora as digital literacies.

Digital literacies, especially those related to the use of social platforms like Twitter and forums like Quora, have become increasingly relevant in the lives of today's teenagers. These digital skills encompass the ability to actively participate, communicate, and manage information in the digital world. However, using these platforms also brings a range of advantages and threats to teenagers.

The advantages I gain from utilizing social literacies like Twitter and Quora are, Twitter and Quora enable teenagers to connect with like-minded individuals and learn from the collective experience and knowledge of the online communities. This opens opportunities for personal growth and self improvement. These platforms offer teenagers a chance to express their ideas, opinions, and creativity through tweets, questions, or answers. This can boost their sense of worth and acceptance within the online community, fostering positive self-esteem and identity. Teenagers can quickly become aware of global issues and engage in discussions about social, political, or environmental topics that matter to them. This expands their understanding of the world and allows them to contribute to finding solutions.

However, there are potential threats that I might encounter. Twitter and Quora also pose risks of exposure to negative content such as hate speech, bullying, and harmful content. Teenagers without strong digital literacy skills might be vulnerable to the negative impact, damaging their self-image and influencing their positive identity. Online interactions can be backfire if teenagers experience social pressure, unhealthy comparison, or identity struggles. This can lead to mental and emotional issues, like anxiety and depression. The use of Twitter and Quora also raises privacy and security risks. Teenagers need to understand the importance of protecting their personal data and maintaining online privacy to avoid misuse by unscrupulous individuals.

The use of Twitter and Quora can shape how teenagers perceive themselves. In the online environment, they may seek new identities or find a place where they feel accepted. However, interacting with diverse views and opinions can also trigger questions about their true identity. Therefore, it is crucial for teenagers to develop strong digital literacy skills to filter information, evaluate the emotional impact of online interactions, and build a positive and authentic identity in both the digital and real worlds.

In conclusion, digital literacy in the context of platforms like Twitter and Quora offers teenagers opportunities to learn, engage, and develop. However, teenagers must be aware of potential threats and negative impacts from irresponsible use. With strong digital literacy skills, they can leverage the advantages of these platforms to enrich their identity and make positive contributions within the online community and the real world.
